God Knows the Detours
Scripture Reference:
Genesis 17:20 (NIV)
“And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him…”
There is something incredible human about becoming weary in waiting.
Abram and Sarai (later Abraham and Sarah…a lot of name changing in the bible ) were carrying a promise from God, yet as the years went by it became harder for them to still believe. Can you relate?
The silence grew heavier.
Their bodies aged.
Their hope faded.
Hope became more and more complicated. And somewhere between faith and disappointment, they did what many of us do when pain stays too long, like an uninvited house guest. This faithful couple tried to help God.
Sarah gave Hagar to Abraham, and Ishmael was born.
What is most striking me about this story is not simply the detour itself, but the tenderness and understanding of God in the midst of it.
Because Ishmael was not the promised son.
Yet God still spoke concerning him.
God did not ignore the mess.
He did not pretend the pain, impatience, grief, or consequences did not exist.
And He did not withdraw His compassion because human emotions complicated the journey.
God understood that our emotions can often get in the way of following Him to see the end of the promise. We stop short in the middle. We stop believing He can handle it, and believe that we are needed for God to achieve His goals for our life.
Sounds ridiculous, right? But, most of us have been there.
Instead of God getting upset and frustrated with His children, God says:
“I have heard you.”
What a powerful reminder for weary souls.
God knew Abraham’s fear.
He knew Sarah’s exhaustion.
He knew Hagar’s suffering.
He knew Ishmael’s future.
Nothing about the situation was alarming to Him.
He made us to be “emotional”.
And maybe that is what some of us need to remember today:
God knows the version of us that is tired of waiting.
The version trying to hold faith together.
The version that made decisions from survival, loneliness, anxiety, grief, or desperation.
He knows.
Not the polished, perfect version.
Not the spiritually impressive and refined version.
The real version.
The one only He and you know.
And somehow, even in the detours, God continues to move with mercy.
The beauty of covenant is that God’s faithfulness is not sustained by our perfection. His promises are not held together by our emotional strength, perfect obedience, or ability to never struggle with doubt, fear, and hopelessness.
God remains faithful even when we are overwhelmed, uncertain, or emotionally exhausted.
The path may become complicated.
But God still knows how to find us there.
God knows us!
Prayer:
Father, God.
Thank you for knowing me fully, and still being gracious and kind.
You see my audacious belief that I can Help you, Help me; and you still remain patient with me.
Today I will trust you to navigate me fully, and to re-navigate me in areas where I took the wheel, and now I am lost and in need of a rescue.
In Jesus Name,
Amen.
